I include  3 things alternately in my diet, chickpeas (kabuli chana), red kidney beans (rajma) and mung bean (moong dal)! They are my proteins! Though the good carbs we get from them should not be ignored! Just don’t forget to soak them at night so that you decrease the cooking time! I use pressure cooker which takes 10-15 minutes for cooking lentils or beans.

For this recipe, I prefer whole green mung bean (moong dal) and not splited ones. I have used the one which has skin on! These are easily available. 1 cup coked green mung bean contains 17g protein (Go here for more info). Raw mango and mung bean is wonderful combination. If you don’t get them, skip it and add lime juice at the end.

Serves 2 persons

Ingredients

1 cup mung beans ( soaked overnight)

1/2 cup chopped raw mango

1 tsp cumin seeds

2 tbsp peanuts

8-9 garlic cloves

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

few drops of oil

21/2 cups of water

salt

For tempering

1 tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

11/2 tsp fennel seeds

1 red chilly

pinch of asafoetida (hing)

8-9 curry leaves

1 -11/2 tsp red chilly powder

For garnish

Coriander leaves

1 tsp fresh cream

Procedure

  • Soak mung bean overnight.
  • In a pressure cooker or deep vessel, put mung bean, chopped raw mango, cumin seeds, garlic, turmeric powder and few drops of oil with 21/2 cups of water and cook till mung bean are soft.

  • Mash the mung bean gently with spoon or ladle. Add salt to it.

  • For tempering, heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to crackle. Add fennel seeds, curry leaves, red chilly, asafoetida and red chilly powder.

  • Add the tempering to mung bean and bring it to boil. Keep stirring. Add water if required.

Serve it with steamed rice or rotis with a cup of yogurt to go with it.
