This really simple dal is cake walk for anyone. It is one of those dishes where you chop a little and rest of the work is done by (my absolute favorite) pressure cooker!

The recipe is very common is Andhra pradesh. The chillies I used were not hot at all. So I was forced to use more of them. And also this particular dal needs few drops of oil to get cooked because of sourness of raw mango. So do add it along with soaking it. This dal has to be little spicy and ofcourse tangy! It is called ‘Pappu’ in my place! Hope you like it!

Serves 4 persons

Ingredients

1 1/4 cup tuvar dal (pigeon peas)

2 big ripe tomatoes (diced)

1/2 cup raw mango (chopped)

5-7 green chillies

1/4 tsp turmeric powder

few drops of oil

salt

For tempering

10-12 garlic cloves

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp cumin seeds

10-15 curry leaves

1 dry red chilli

pinch of asafoetida (hing)

1 tbsp oil

Serve with steamed rice.

Procedure

  • Soak dal for 20 minutes. In a pressure cooker , put dal, chopped mango, tomatoes, turmeric powder , whole green chillies and few drops of oil. Add 2 to 21/2 cups of water. Pressure cook it for 3 whitles or till lentils are soft and nice.

  • Allow the pressure to get released  from pressure cooker. Open it and add salt and mash the lentils along with cooked mango and tomato.

  • For tempering, heat oil. Add garlic and mustard seeds. Allow it splutter. Add cumin, curry leaves , red chilly and asafoetida. Mix it and after few seconds , put off the heat. Pour the tempering over dal and mix it.
